Thoroughbred Makeover Clinics

These Sunday clinics are open to horses and riders who competed in the Makeover. Auditors are welcome to join us free of charge and do not need to register to attend. Bring a camp chair and soak up some knowledge.

Dressage Complex 9am
Jennifer R. Roth is a USDF Gold Medalist, USEF “r” dressage judge, and active FEI competitor and instructor. Riders will perform a dressage test of their choice for Jennifer, hear her commentary, and then ride the test a second time. Riders receive a scored test for each ride.

Steeplechase Infield 10:30-12:00 and 1:30 – 3:00
Nick is best known for winning the inaugural Adelaide International Horse Trials CCI***, the inaugural Rolex Kentucky CCI****, and riding for the New Zealand Equestrian Team. These were all with Red, a New Zealand Thoroughbred ex-racehorse. Riders will school the Makeover cross country course with instruction on how to create the balance, adjustability, and harmony that prepare young horses to move up the levels.

Shaina Humphrey
Stonelea Ring 8am – 11am
Shaina Humphrey is a USEF “R” judge of hunters and jumpers who has represented the United States in international show jumping competition and worked with Thoroughbreds throughout her career both on and off the track. Shaina will review her judging notes from the participants’ rides and help each rider to improve the fundamentals that will make their next show an improvement over their Makeover performance.

Richard’s outstanding reputation as a clinician and coach includes work not only with show jumpers, but also eventing and dressage. He holds his Level I British Horse Society Instructor Certification and US Eventing Association Level III Instructor Certification. Richard will review his judging notes from the participants’ rides and help each rider to improve the fundamentals that will make their next show an improvement over their Makeover performance.

Steeplechase Infield 9-10:30 and 12:00-1:30
Tom Mansmann has worked as a whipper-in for several Virginia hunts, evented through advanced, galloped steeplechase horses, and worked as a rider for Olympians Jessica Ransehousen and Wash Bishop. In 2015 he won the North American Field Hunter Championships. This clinic will take place on the Makeover Field Hunter course and cover the skills needed to turn an ex-racehorse into a dependable field hunter.

Lindsey is a Platinum Level Natural Horsemanship Coach and Trainer, a Level I Centered Riding Coach, and holds Parelli Level 4 Freestyle & Finesse and Level III Liberty & Online certifications. Since winning the Competitive Trail division at the Thoroughbred Makeover in 2015 and 2016, as well as taking home the America’s Most Wanted Thoroughbred title in 2015 and the Freestyle championship in 2016 Lindsey’s career as a clinician has taken off. She will share key principles to her own “Harmony Horsemanship” method to help your horse encounter new obstacles with confidence.

Russell Littlefield won the 2016 Thoroughbred Makeover Working Ranch title, as well as 10 world championships and numerous top 10 titles with the AQHA, APHA, ABRA and others. He has been training professionally for 25 years. This clinic will cover the fundamentals of the reining work portion of the working ranch division and how it applies to the work with cattle. Western tack recommended but not required. Cattle will not be used.

Justin Powers is Director of Club Development at the United States Polo Association and grew up playing  in his family’s Powers Polo School. Introducing polo to newcomers is his passion and talent. He will teach the basic maneuvers that polo ponies must demonstrate and introduce players to stick and ball work.

Tik Maynard

Many of you might know Tik as the author of Training With Tik, an exploration of training methods applied to off-track Thoroughbreds across disciplines. As the son of a grand prix show jumper and a grand prix dressage rider Tik grew up on horses. He won the Freestyle title at the 2015 Makeover, is an advanced level eventer, was Canadian Pentathlon National Champion, and is a popular horsemanship clinician. Having judged all of this year’s freestyle rides with his friend Dan James, Tik will have a lot to say about what it takes to win this division. He will start where he always does. Are you safe? Is your horse safe? Is your horse relaxed? Does your horse understand you?
