FINAL TBMakeover 1200x220 TCA2

Information for the Racing Industry

The Retired Racehorse Project’s mission is to increase demand for Thoroughbreds retiring off the track, creating bridges between the racing industry and the sport horse community.

We created the Thoroughbred Makeover to showcase the trainability and talent of off-track Thoroughbreds. The competition is intended to inspire good trainers to become involved in transitioning these horses to second careers, and the National Symposium serves to educate the people involved in the care, training, and sale of these horses to responsible owners.

Why is this important to the racing industry? Now in its sixth year, the Makeover has already increased demand for horses that are eligible for the competition. Trainers who have horses that aren’t finding much success at the track have a potential market for these horses among the hundreds of Makeover competitors who are looking for retiring horses every year.

Eligibility:

To compete in the 2021 Makeover, a horse must:

  • Be registered with the Jockey Club and tattooed or microchipped.
  • Have raced or had a published work after July 1, 2019.
