2019 Thoroughbred Makeover Schedule

Overview of Events

PrelimRoundsTuesday, Oct. 1: Inaugural Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit

The Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program (TIP) and the Retired Racehorse Project are joining forces to present this conference focused on education and networking among those with a professional interest in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds after racing. The summit, through featured speakers, will focus on topics such as finance, business management, board governance and grant- and sponsorship-seeking best practices. There is no cost to attend the summit; however, attendees are encouraged to RSVP at TBmakeover.org.

PrelimRoundsWednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2-3: Preliminary Rounds

The Makeover offers 10 competitive disciplines: barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunter, freestyle (a free-form division to demonstrate skills of the trainer’s choice), polo, ranch work, show hunter and show jumper. A horse can be entered in up to two disciplines.

Preliminary rounds take place on Wednesday and Thursday. (To see the specific tests required in each discipline, click here.) Each competitor receives a preliminary round score, and the top five in each discipline advance to the Finale.

VendorsWednesday through Saturday, Oct. 2-5: Vendor Fair

Dozens of companies, businesses and organizations take part in the Makeover Vendor Fair, held in and just outside of the TCA Covered Arena. Shop for new gear, supplements and feed for your OTTB, and pick up some goodies for yourself as well!

VendorsWednesday through Saturday, Oct. 2-5: Silent Auction

Once again, bidders can participate in the Thoroughbred Makeover Silent Auction both online and in person, allowing anyone — not just Makeover attendees — to win. The silent auction kicks off RRP’s fundraising for 2020. Offerings this year include racing memorabilia, donated services such as lessons or sport horse breedings, gifts, handmade items, and more. The online auction catalog will go live at TBMakeover.org on September 23rd, and items will be on display in Booths 60-63 on the concourse in the TCA Covered Arena. Bidding closes at 4 PM Saturday, October 5th.

SaleWednesday through Saturday, Oct. 2-5: ASPCA Makeover Marketplace

Many Makeover trainers take on off-track Thoroughbreds as resale projects, and the Makeover provides a unique opportunity for horse-shoppers to see dozens of OTTBs successfully competing in a second career in one location. Out of the 474 horses in the 2019 Makeover (as of August 15), 150 of those are being offered for sale by their owners. In 2018, over 40 Marketplace horses were confirmed to have sold in the months following the Makeover for an average price of $8,800 — up from 2017’s average.

The horses competing in the Makeover have been carefully selected for suitability and soundness, and each has successfully graduated from an intensive training program. Trainers invest an average of $8,000 in their Makeover horses in preparation for the competition, giving them a solid foundation through training and care that will serve them well throughout their post-racing careers. If the trainers can recoup their costs, other horses will go through their programs and also graduate to new careers and good homes.

This is not an auction — all sales are private contracts between the buyer and seller. The RRP is not involved in the sale and does not receive any commission. Click here to view the online listings.

StartingGateThumbThursday, Oct. 3: ASPCA Coffee Meet & Greet

10:00 AM outside Barn 7

Stop by the lawn at Barn 7, enjoy a cup of coffee, and meet representatives from Makeover Marketplace sponsors ASPCA! Learn more about their programs that support equine rescue and Thoroughbred aftercare.

MasterClassFriday, Oct. 4: TERF Makeover Master Class
Presented by Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation

Emily Brollier Curtis, Doug Nunn and Elisa Wallace

9:00 AM in the TCA Covered Arena

Thoroughbreds are enjoying a resurgence, thanks to the exponential growth of the Thoroughbred Makeover and other increasingly-effective and well-organized aftercare initiatives. A new wave of equestrian enthusiasts is trying Thoroughbreds for the first time or returning to the breed after decades away.

But getting started with an off-track project can be overwhelming — everyone on the internet wants to tell you how to train your horse. Additionally, restarting a retired racehorse can be quite different from any previous experience you’ve had starting young horses.

The Makeover Master Class was conceived to give you a comprehensive look at what to consider when evaluating prospects and how to approach those early rides off the track in a way that creates a solid foundation and partnership. The sessions are free for all to attend and provide plenty of opportunities to ask questions.  Click here for more information on the Makeover Master Class.

MasterClassFriday, Oct. 4: Seminars,
Presented by: The Horse Media Group

TCA Covered Arena Club Lounge

Makeover attendees will have the opportunity to sit in on three educational seminars and panel discussions dedicated to the care, training and marketing of off-track Thoroughbreds. Seminars are free and open to all. Topics include preventing injury and disease in your OTTB (sponsored by Godolphin), feeding your OTTB (sponsored by Triple Crown Nutrition), and pre-purchase exams (sponsored by UK Ag Equine Programs).  Click here for detailed seminar descriptions and exact times.

MasterClassFriday, Oct. 4: Makeover Celebration Party (ticket required)

6 PM, Ashwood Training Center

Tickets available at tbmakeover.org/tickets

It’s time to party, with a Thoroughbred twist: head over to Ashwood Training Center, just five minutes from the Kentucky Horse Park, and enjoy an evening of great food, live music and cash bar. Ashwood Training Center is an active Thoroughbred training facility that will provide a perfect Bluegrass backdrop to a catered barbecue dinner. Some special awards will be presented, so don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate!

winnerSaturday, Oct. 5: Makeover Finale and Thoroughbred Makeover Champion (ticket required)

The Finale takes place all day Saturday in the TCA Covered Arena, with the top five riders from each discipline’s preliminary round returning. Each discipline competes separately in the Finale, and each has its own final test to determine the Makeover Champion in that discipline. The crowd favorite (determined by text message voting) from among the 10 discipline winners is then crowned the Thoroughbred Makeover Champion and earns a $10,000 check. The Finale is a ticketed event; purchase tickets at tbmakeover.org.

The Finale livestream is presented by US Equestrian and available exclusively on USEF.org.
