Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit, first held in 2019 the day before the start of competition at the Thoroughbred Makeover, is put on by the Retired Racehorse Project, Thoroughbred Charities of America and Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Focusing on education and networking among those with a professional interest in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds, topics of discussion include finance, business management, board governance and grant- and sponsorship-seeking best practices.

The inaugural 2019 summit panelists included Mike Meuser, Jen Shah and Allison Carter. Meuser is a Lexington-based attorney with the law firm of Miller, Griffin & Marks whose specialty includes equine law and civil litigation. Shah is a CPA, serving as the head of equine services for Dean Dorton, a Lexington-based financial consulting firm. Also representing Dean Dorton was Allison Carter, associate director of tax services. Additionally, representatives from grant-funding organizations including TAA, TCA, ASPCA and The Right Horse were on hand to answer questions from attendees, as well as participate in discussions about current challenges facing aftercare.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit is free to attend, but RSVP is requested. An RSVP link will be avaialble closer to the date of the 2020 summit on Tuesday, October 6.
