Learn More About Becoming a Volunteer

Putting on an event the size of the Thoroughbred Makeover on a non-profit’s budget, in a normal year, requires an army of volunteers. This event takes over 100 volunteers to run smoothly, and this year with a longer week and two competition years packed in at once, we're going to need all the help we can get!

If you’re interested in volunteering for the 2022 event, you may access the volunteer sign up via the button below (free user account required).

Make sure you’re also receiving our email newsletter, and join our Volunteers Facebook group so we can keep you up to date on specific volunteer needs as we get closer to the event.

Volunteering FAQ:

Where and when is the 2022 Thoroughbred Makeover?
Volunteers are needed Oct. 12-15 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. The formal event dates are Oct. 12-15.

Why should I volunteer?
We consistently hear from our competitors and volunteers that the Makeover is unlike any other horse show they’ve attended. It’s a fun, supportive atmosphere, and we pride ourselves on having great volunteers who keep everything running smoothly. It’s also a great way to get a feel for how the Makeover works, if you’re considering competing down the line. It is possible that spectators may still be limited at the time of the event, but volunteers are not counted in that limit, so volunteering is a solid way to ensure you get a front-row seat!

What kind of volunteering jobs are available?
All of the typical jobs that go along with a horse show: scribes, ring stewards, announcers, ring crew, jump judges, scorers, runners, ticket-takers, and so on. If you have volunteered at an equestrian competition in the past, chances are good that we can put you to work in a similar capacity. We have plenty of volunteer positions that don’t require any special expertise, too… great for parents and significant others! Can't be there with us? We also have remote opportunities in advance of the event, helping us recruit and confirm volunteers.

Can I volunteer on a particular day or during a particular time slot?
Yes! Our sign up is ready with shifts in all positions. Note that times are approximate and will be confirmed as we get closer to the event.

Can I volunteer if I’m also competing?
Yes! We have many competitors who volunteer in the disciplines that run on a schedule different from their own.

What do you provide to volunteers?
A t-shirt, baseball hat, lunch, a Finale ticket, 20% discount at the RRP store and our undying gratitude. *Show your volunteer badge for finale access and store discount.
